Importing Recipes
Overview
If you already have recipes in other tools or spreadsheets, you do not need to recreate them from scratch. Formuley supports importing recipes from multiple sources, including SoapCalc, CSV files, and other common formats.
Getting to the Import Page
There are several ways to start an import:
- Navigate to Formulas in the sidebar, then click the Import button at the top of the formulas list. This takes you to
/formulas/import. - From the Dashboard, use the Quick Actions panel and click Import Recipe. This links directly to
/formulas/import?source=soapcalc, pre-selecting the SoapCalc import option.
Import Methods
SoapCalc Import
SoapCalc is one of the most popular soap recipe calculators. Formuley can parse SoapCalc recipe data and convert it into a full formula.
- Open your recipe in SoapCalc and copy the recipe data.
- In Formuley, go to Formulas and click Import.
- Select SoapCalc as the import source.
- Paste your SoapCalc recipe data into the text field.
- Click Parse Recipe. Formuley reads the ingredient names, percentages, and lye calculations.
- Review the parsed formula. Formuley matches SoapCalc ingredients to entries in your ingredient library where possible. Any unmatched ingredients are flagged for you to map manually or add as new ingredients.
- Click Create Formula to save the imported recipe.
Formuley preserves SoapCalc-specific data such as SAP values, water ratios, and superfat percentages when creating the formula.
CSV Import
For recipes stored in spreadsheets or exported from other tools, CSV import provides a flexible option.
- Prepare a CSV file with at least two columns: ingredient name and percentage (or weight).
- Go to Formulas and click Import, then select CSV.
- Upload your CSV file or paste its contents directly.
- Map the columns in your CSV to the required fields: Ingredient Name and Percentage (or Amount).
- Review the parsed ingredients. As with SoapCalc import, Formuley attempts to match ingredient names to your existing library.
- Adjust any mappings or add missing ingredients, then click Create Formula.
Your CSV can include optional columns such as supplier, phase, or notes. Formuley maps recognized columns automatically and ignores unrecognized ones.
Other Formats
Formuley also supports importing from other recipe formats. The import page provides options for common cosmetics formulation tools. The process follows the same general pattern: provide your recipe data, review the parsed result, resolve any ingredient matches, and save the formula.
Tips for Successful Imports
- Build your ingredient library first. The more ingredients you have in your library, the more automatic matches Formuley can make during import, saving you time on manual mapping.
- Review matched ingredients carefully. Formuley matches by name similarity, but you should verify that each match is correct before saving.
- Check percentages. After import, open the formula in the Formula Builder to confirm that all percentages total correctly and the recipe looks right.
- Use the Dashboard Quick Action for fast SoapCalc imports when you are transitioning recipes from SoapCalc to Formuley.
After Import
Once your formula is created, it works exactly like any formula you build manually. You can edit it in the Formula Builder, log batches against it, and track costs. See Formula Builder Overview for details on working with your imported formula.
