Recording a Batch

Overview

Recording batches is how you track every production run in Formuley. Each batch links to a formula, captures production details, and optionally deducts ingredients from your inventory.

Starting a New Batch

There are two ways to begin:

  1. Navigate to Batches in the sidebar and click Log Batch.
  2. From the Dashboard, use the Quick Actions panel and select Log Batch.

Both paths take you to the batch creation form.

Filling Out the Batch Form

Select a Formula

Choose a formula from the dropdown. Each option shows the formula name followed by its total weight in parentheses -- for example, "Lavender Body Butter (500 g)." Once you select a formula, the ingredients preview populates automatically.

Batch Date

A date picker defaults to today's date. Change it if you are logging a batch that was produced on a different day.

Scale Factor

The Scale Factor field controls the batch size relative to the original formula:

  • 1.0 produces the formula at its original size.
  • 2.0 doubles all ingredient amounts.
  • 0.5 halves them.

Enter any decimal value to scale to your needs.

Ingredients Preview

When a formula is selected, a preview table appears showing:

ColumnDescription
Ingredient NameEach ingredient in the formula
AmountQuantity after applying the scale factor
In StockA check mark if you have enough, or a warning icon if stock is insufficient
CostIngredient cost for this batch based on current unit prices

This preview helps you verify that you have the materials on hand before starting production.

Summary

Below the ingredients table, a summary section displays:

  • Total Yield -- the expected output weight/volume.
  • Units Made -- number of finished units (e.g., jars, bars).
  • Total Cost -- sum of all ingredient costs at the scaled amounts.
  • Cost per Unit -- total cost divided by units made.

Batch Details

Fill in the production specifics:

  • Status -- select from Planned, In Progress, Completed, Failed, or Quarantine.
  • Quality Rating -- rate the batch from 1 to 5 stars.
  • Actual Yield -- the real output, which may differ from the calculated total yield.
  • Units Made -- how many finished units you produced.
  • Unit Size -- the size of each unit (e.g., 100 g, 4 oz).
  • Production Date -- the date production took place (can differ from the batch date if you are pre-planning).
  • Notes -- free-text field for observations, issues, or reminders.

Inventory Deduction

The Deduct from Inventory checkbox controls whether Formuley automatically subtracts the ingredient amounts from your stock levels. This option is only available when the batch status is set to Completed. For batches in other statuses (Planned, In Progress, Failed, Quarantine), inventory is not deducted.

Saving the Batch

Click Save Batch to record the batch. You are redirected to the Batches list page, where your new batch appears with its status, formula name, and date.

Tips

  • Use the Ingredients Preview to catch stock shortages before you start producing.
  • Set status to Planned for batches you intend to make later, then update to Completed when done.
  • Enable Deduct from Inventory only for completed batches to keep your stock levels accurate.
  • To walk through production step by step, see Making Mode. For post-production documentation, see Batch Documentation.
